Sometime after eleven that evening, the Gogarty minivan pulls up alongside Rossdale and Dad kills the motor. A single bulb burns above the front door, illuminating a brass knocker that gives the impression of this actually being a home. The road is stunningly quiet and dark, no streetlights, no cars, no noise. It occurs to Aideen that Gran must miss the sound of the sea.
âRight,â says Dad. âHere we are.â
âI need to stop by Margate and get some papers,â Gran announces, sniffing.
Dad hops pointedly out of the van and heaves open the sliding backseat door.
âCount of three,â he says.
âI have to go over my will. Make some changes.â Is she winking at Aideen? Itâs hard to tell in the dark, but Granâs face does have that wild shit-stirring look.
âIâll ring you first thing in the morning,â Dad says now, reaching across Gran to unbuckle her seat belt.
âRing?â She blocks his hand from the buckle. âI havenât gotten a single phone call since I arrived.â
âThat is patently untrue,â Dad says. He leans Granâs umbrella against the van and offers both hands to her. Gran ignores him, sighs and sits back, as if fireside.
âIn actual fact, I did get a phone call. From Sylvia.â
Aideen stirs.
âWho?â Irritation creeps into Dadâs voice. âOh, her.â
âSylvia rang?â says Aideen.
âFrom America, no less.â
âThatâs splendid,â says Dad. âCan I assist you out of the van, Mum? Letâsâgive me your good hand there.â
Gran bristles. âI want to go home.â
âAnd you will, just as soon as youâre fully recovered,â says Dad.
âSylviaâs in America?â This, from Aideen, is asked as casually as she can muster.
âThe surgery was a success.â
Aideen says, âWhat surgery?â
âMum, itâs late and Ciaran needs to go to bed. Can we talk about this tomorrow? Please, just give me your good hand.â
Granâs face fogs. âWait now⦠Did I not mentionâ¦? I suppose I didnât.â
âShe needed surgery?â says Aideen.
âOh no, not Sylvia,â says Gran. âSheâs right as rain. The most thorough American you can imagine.â
Dad sighs. âI thought you just said she had surgery?â
âNo, it was the boy she looks after, her nephew. Did you never meet him? From Florida.â
âWhat in the world are you talking about, Mum?â
âSean, Sylviaâs young charge,â Millie says, as if they are all brain-dead, âhas a life-threatening illness.â
âWhoâs Sean?â says Nuala.
Throughout these detonations, Aideen has barely dared breathe. Sheâs struggling to absorb this data dump, grateful that the darkness can hide her shock and also that Sean never laid eyes on her sister.
âIn actual fact,â Gran says, âhe was on his deathbed, if you must know. He called at the house a few times with her. I will say, he helped me tremendously. Extremely helpful.â She looks directly at Dad. âOdd jobs Iâve been trying to get accomplished. He rewired the lamp in the kitchen.â
âWhat do you mean Seanâs⦠sick?â says Aideen. âI donât think so, Gran.â
âDo you know him?â Mum asks.
Aideen mumbles a sort of affirmative.
âOh I donât remember what the disease was,â Gran says. She removes her hat, scratches with gusto the back of her scrubby head.
